Shambles 2 - 4 BBQ Crew Shambles Team: James, Ian, Andy, Simon, Will, Mickey, Dave.
Goal scorers: Mickey, Will.
Both the Shambles and BBQ crew came into this game in good form, with both winning their previous 2 games. James made a welcome return from injury, with understudy Ian relieved of his duties.
The game got underway and Ian's first touch, after keeping goal for the past few games, is kindly described in the match notes as "rusty". This summed up the slow start made by the boys in blue and yellow, with James being called into action quickly into his return - making a fine save.
The Shambles boys settled down and the good passing that has been evident in recent weeks began to come through, with the notes identifying a particularly nice 1-2 between Andy and Ian. Amidst the fine passing came a good effort from Ian, saved well by the BBQ 'keeper. Unfortunately, BBQ were also playing some nice passes, which culminated in a good cut through shot which could only be parried into the net by James.
Shambles 0 - 1 BBQ Crew
After the goal, Shambles stepped up a gear and, according to the match report, "peppered" the BBQ goal. The pressure finally paid dividends after a great interception by Mickey, followed by a clinical finish.
Shambles 1 - 1 BBQ Crew
After a period of equality between the 2 teams, BBQ Crew got themselves back in the lead with a cross pitch free-kick which culminated in a bobbled shot that squirmed past a despairing James.
Shambles 1 - 2 BBQ Crew
After a brief scare - when James pulled off a blinding save immediately after rolling the ball straight to a BBQ Crewer - the Shambles finished the half strongly, with Will striking the bar in the process.
Half-Time
The second half began as the first half had ended - with Shambles in the ascendency. Shambles got their deserved equaliser when Will latched on to a sloppy BBQ pass after some good pressure from Dave.
Shambles 2 - 2 BBQ Crew
After working so hard to get back in the game, Shambles got sloppy - much like a bad BBQ sauce! BBQ Crew took full advantage of the lapse Shambles defence with a long range strike with little pressure.
Shambles 2 - 3 BBQ Crew
Whilst Shambles had a lot of the ball after the 3rd goal, BBQ Crew upped their game defensively, giving the Shamblers little time to dwell on the ball. This reporter can only recall an effort from Dave troubling the BBQ goalie.
As Shambles desperately sought the 3rd equaliser of the night, they left themselves exposed and a BBQ break culminated in a fine chipped finish over James which hit the underside of the bar before bouncing into the back of the net.
Full-Time: Shambles 2 - 4 BBQ Crew
Summary: We huffed and we puffed, but we just couldn't blow out the BBQ! Another good passing display, and we certainly had enough chances to win the game, but we just didn't make their keeper work half as much as we did in our previous 2 games. As desperation crept in, we neglected our defensive duties - underestimating the attacking threat of the BBQ Crew - which ultimately cost us the game.
Up the Shambles,
