Shambles 2 Veteris 1

Another gladitorial entry into the footballing amphitheatre of Perdiswell for The Shambles, who had been put to the sword in recent games.
As a bonus this week i actually turned up before the game started!!
Veteris were the opponents this week and a tough encounter was expected, especially as the established Gladiator Tim was leader of his band of battlers.
Ian was in goal for The Shambles in the continued absence of James. Captain Will, leader of the Legion, Simon, Andy & Mickey took to the field of battle. Dave and I were kept back in reserve.
Kick off (in the nicest way!).
The Shambles quickly got their passing going and Mickey had a couple of early blows at the oppositions goal.
Defence was not exactly being executed well by either side as legionnaires followed the ball at times, allowing theopposition to sneak behind the enemy lines. But the threat in front of goal was not quite there for either team.
Against the run of play Veteris took the lead. Ellis hit a shot wide of goal, Ian stooped to gather the shot as it came back off the wall, only to guide the ball into his own net. He looked like a Hen keeper who had realised he had shooed his flock into a fox hole. Unlucky Keeps!!...... 0-1
It was a worry that heads could drop but the Shamblers just had to maintain their overall supremacy in terms of attack.
Ian made a save from another Veteris effort. Come on boys believe.
Captain Will had the ball in the net, only for it to be quickly ruled out for entering the area.
It was now end to end jousting in the arena as the sides counter attacked.
First change, Flash enters the arena.
Flash instantly has a long range effort which curled and dipped and was saved well by Tim, the oppo keeper.
Good interplay gave Andy a chance to shoot.
Flash attempts a pass to the wing from midfield which is intercepted, the reulting Veteris effort was saved by Ian.
Flash lashed a bit of a wild effort through the air which was a bit like watching a firework when it goes rogue!!
Andy was now letting the oppo know he was there and gave away a foul.
As a final act of the half an Andy shot was saved.
Half time. It was looking like one of those games where the effort might not be rewarded with a goal for The Shamblers. But they just needed to believe.
Captain Will decided to bring me into the fray at the start of the second half.
Confusion reigns as Veteris decide to kick off the second half as well. The Ref calls te paly back just as Veteris line up a goal attempt. Cue the first minor whinge.
Simon puts through a ball, Tim the Keeper's momentum takes him out of the area, penalty awarded to the Shambles. Cue more dicussion (whinging).
I stand in defence as Simon lines up the penalty. "Hit it to the Keeper's right" goes through my head. "One step" is shouted to Si by the Ref. Si duly obliges and slots it in to the Keeper's right as Tim goes the wrong way. Good penalty....phew....1-1
There was more momentum in the Shambles play now, more bite.
I was giving Ellis no space and conceded a foul, Ellis questioned whether the Ref could see what was going on...oooooooh!!
Andy passes the ball through to Mickey..Goooaallll !! .........2-1
Confusion as 3 of us watch the ball drift, allowing Veteris to clear the danger
Andy makes a great tackle, Will is battling well.
Simon makes a great turn and shhots. No goal.
Tim was playing well in the oppo goal.
I again let Ellis know there was no space...another foul...another whinge.Ellis makes the mistake of implying the Ref was wearing Shambles yellow ansd was warned the next time he implies favouritism he would be the favourite to get banned.
I had a shot that went wide of the far post. I watched it, hoping Flash would pounce on the ball but a second ball suddenly appeared causing play to stop. Flash is fast but not even he could shoot both in to make sure one would count !!
Towards the end Veteris throw men forward at the Shambles goal but can't make the possession count.
The final note appears to be "Hit Keeper Tim in Nuts".
A good game, played in the right spirit.
Let's build on this win boys.
