Shambles Mugged
Shambles Mugged
After the excitement of the fantastic result the week before, Shambles were riding high in confidence when faced with the challenge of the league topping 'The Mug'. Shambles once again adopted the 3 defenders and 1 striker formation that had served them so well the previous week, with Will.I.am, Worst and HRH starting along the back, and Mickey - returning after a nasty tackle a few weeks prior - started up top.

The return of Flash to the fray also meant Shambles had the luxury of a substitute!

The game started with a very strange kick off from HRH, nearly resulting in an own goal from Worst. However Shambles soon steadied the ship with Will.I.am mistiming a great through ball and Mickey striking the post. Some of the play was excellent, Shambles looked tight at the back with the solid 3, and going forward were playing some excellent stuff with the 3 defenders taking it in turns to get it forward down the wings and help Mickey!

But, as we all know, a football match is decided by goals and not scintillating play! Shambles were made to pay for not taking their chances and, after a great block from Worst, the Mug player managed to get to the rebound, squeeze it through Worst's legs and onto the inside of BOTH posts and in to the net. What can you do......

Not to be disheartened, Shambles carried on with the good football - Worst and Will.I.am linking up with a great one-two from which a blistering Worst effort was well saved by the Mug keeper. As before, Shambles were quickly made to pay with a second Mug goal almost identical to the first - squeezed through a defenders legs and trickling in off the post. No chance for Clint for either goal - having had relatively little to do thus far!

Then, just before half-time the Mug made it 3 with a powerful strike from an acute angle, clipping the inside of the near post before nestling in the net. 0 - 3 at half-time, and the Shambles were not playing badly at all!

In the second-half, with Shambles trailing by 3, the formation moved to more a two back two forward as Shambles looked to get back in the game. Despite leaving themselves open on a few occasions giving Clint plenty to do, Shambles continued to press with there nice short crisp passing adopted in the first half. Worst came close trying to curl the ball round the defender into the far corner - a finger tip save coming to the Mug's rescue. Later, a shot coming back off the wall fell to Flash on the edge of the box - an instinctive toe-poke could struck against the post. Another Shambles chance gone begging!

After much persistence, Shambles got a goal back, a fine through ball (unfortunately the match notes do not include the supplier!) to Mickey who purposely - in my opinion - poked the ball through a small gap underneath the keepers left arm, where the ball rolled down the goal keepers body and trickled into the net. 3 - 1. Unfortunately this is how the game was to end.

Discussion amongst the lads upstairs were very upbeat and positive. Everyone knew how well we had played
- perhaps the best ever - but we were unfortunate to lose. Normally there is an underlying reason for a loss - poor defending with strikers not pulling their weight defensively or defenders galavanting in search of goals. This game however, saw Shambles tactically superb. The goals conceded were very unfortunate indeed. Perhaps our only sin is not finishing our chances. Had Shambles taken the lead they thoroughly deserved in the first half, I have no doubt we would have been able to hold on to get something out the game as we did in against the BBQ Crew.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. More performances like the last 2 please!
