Shambles go South thanks to Westside! After the fabulous victory over Citie Central the week before, Shambles appeared to be in a buoyant mood going into this one, thinking perhaps the tide had turned ready for Shambles to make their assent up the like in the second half of the season.
Perhaps it was the over confidence, or maybe the extremely attacking side fielded boasting only Postie as the fully recognised defender but things started badly for Shambles as Westside struck the first blow. 1 - 0 Westside.
After much huffing and puffing from the boys in yellow, Aidy entered the fray for his first action of the season. His impact was almost instantly telling when good link up play saw him get a great effort on goal which was finely matched by the Westside keeper. The ball came out to Will who in trying to steer it goalwards managed to hit the inside of the post, the goalkeepers face and the crossbar. Everything but the goal!
Shortly after Westside made it 2 -0 with a stunning strike, despite Shambles efforts.
However, Shambles were on the mark after some great work by Craig where he began by taking on players on the left wing, came across the face of goal before laying it of for Will on the right hand side who powered it into the bottom left corner. 2 - 1 and Shambles were back in in!
The remainder of the first half saw James P make a fine save, before Flash had his head in his hands after missing a glorious opportunity from the edge of the box. The final action of the half saw Shambles let off the hook, as the referee inexplicably blew for half-time as a Westside man struck to put the ball in the net for a third time. Very odd refereeing indeed!
Half-time: Westside 2- 1 Shambles.
If lady luck had seemed to shine on the Shambles in the first half, she showed she can indeed be a cruel in the second! The half started well with Craig getting himself a well struck goal to bring Shambles back level. 2-2 and it seemed the boys in yellow were on the ascendency!
Unfortunately, a roll out from James P that appeared to be setting Flash on his way for a Shambles attack ended up wedged in the stands making up the left hand wall. Westside duly retrieved their gift and put the ball in the net to make it 3 - 2.
This was a hammer blow for the Shambles, and meant the attacking instincts of Carl, Craig, Aidy, Will and Flash often left poor old Postie defending amicably against 2 Westside forwards. Despite the many efforts on goal by the shambles boys, it was Westside who got the next goal. A Westside player who had seemed unable to hit a barn door up until the, struck an absolute wonder goal from what this reporter recalls as around the half way line. James P absolutely no chance!
After some poor refereeing decisions relating to head height again prominent, Shambles managed to get a third. Some industrious battling from Carl on the right found Will in space in the centre to place the ball into the net. Westside 4 - 3 Shambles.
Finally, the referee who had seemingly been on intent on having some say on the game gave a poor foul decision against Carl in a corner of the Shambles half. Shambles at that point of the game were unfortunately not alert enough and Westside rolled the ball across the area to a free man who duly placed the ball in the corner against a despairing James. Westside 5 - 3 Shambles.

Verdict: An unfortunate defeat for Shambles. Once again Shambles failed to take their chances, with at least 2 good chances missed by Will and and another from Flash. It is also important to mention that the good long range efforts of Carl, Aidy and Craig caused their keeper to make many fine saves. It is difficult to know what went wrong this week, as we played OK but never went up the gears to turn on a good performance. In truth though, we probably did enough to earn at least a draw, but luck was against us. Perhaps the lack of the fully regimented 2 -2 shape which normally server Shambles so well was missing with Postie as the only recognised defender. Anyway, onwards and upwards to the next game. I'm still adamant that when our finishing improves, so will our league position!

Up the Shambles,
